Inaugurated in 2005, marking the 50th anniversary of the publication of Anne Morrow Lindbergh's beloved classic work Gift from the Sea, the Tellina Scholars Program is named for the shell of the same name, the tellina or sunrise tellin, one of the iconic shells highlighted in the book. The program seeks to encourage the writing of poetry and recognize Lee County's young poets in an era of profound and accelerating technological change when science and technological proficiency seem to be given priority over eloquence and the ability to communicate the human side of life's equation.
